Arthritis

Arthritis is a very common disease that affects millions worldwide, but that is often misdiagnosed or misunderstood. “Arthritis”, in and of itself, is actually not a single disease, it is an overarching term for joint pain or joint degeneration disease.

Who Experiences Arthritis?

There are over one hundred different types of arthritis and related conditions like fibromyalgia and carpal tunnel syndrome. Another common misconception of arthritis is that only the elderly experience it -- people of all stages of life, race, and sexes can experience arthritic pain. It is the leading cause of disability in the USA. Reported on the Arthritis Foundation’s website, “more than 50 million adults and 300,000 children have some type of arthritis. It is most common among women and occurs more frequently as people get older”.

Recognizing Arthritis

The most commonly reported symptoms associated with arthritis are swelling, pain, fatigue, and stiffness of the joints as well as limited mobility and decreased range of motion. According to many patients, symptoms come and go and can be moderate or severe. This is what many refer to as “flare ups”. On the more severe end of things, severe arthritis can develop into chronic pain, resulting in the inability to do daily activities, like making it very difficult to walk, climb stairs, or dress oneself.

The Arthritis Foundation also reports that “Arthritis can cause permanent joint changes. These changes may be visible, such as knobby finger joints, but often the damage can only be seen on X-ray. Some types of arthritis also affect the heart, eyes, lungs, kidneys and skin as well as the joints.”
